According to our data, there were 155,900 patent applications files at the USPTO in 2023 (FY 2023, October 1, 2022, to September 30, 2023).

 

2023 United States USPTO Patent Applications Top Patent Filers

As part of our 2023 Patent Roundup series, we looked at the patents filed at the USPTO in 2023 and analyzed the patenting trends of the top 10 patent filers. We put particular focus on exploring patent co-authorships and the various collaboration networks each organization engages with. Samsung is the top patent filer in the U.S.

Samsung Electronics is the top patent filer in the United States, recording 4,996 patent applications. Huawei and Canon follow with 3, 097 and 2,183 patent applications respectively. Our patent grants data also shows that Samsung was granted the most patents by the USPTO in 2023.

 

Samsung Electronics continues to engage in partnerships with prominent academic institutions. In their patent applications for FY 2023, they formed partnerships with seven universities in South Korea and two in the United States, emphasizing the strategic value of tapping into the collective expertise of academic research both locally and globally.

Notable additions to their collaborative network, as compared to their patent grants, include UNIST, Stanford, Hanyang University and Corning. The inclusion of Corning in the list suggests a focused interest in materials and glass technology, providing insights into Samsung’s dedication to advancing display and device durability.

 

15% of 2023 U.S. patent applications are in electric digital data processing

USPTO patent data in 2023 show that 15% U.S. patent applications are in electric digital data processing (G06F), with 23,749 applications. The second and third most patented domains are transmission of digital information (H04L) and wireless communication networks (H04W), illustrating the pace of innovation in efficient data transmission and communication infrastructures. 

Medical and diagnostic patent applications in 2023

Medical and diagnostic technologies are well-represented, with patent applications in diagnosis, surgery, and identification (A61B) and preparations for medical, dental, or toiletry purposes (A61K). Fujifilm, Covidien (acquired by Medtronic in 2015) and Boston Scientific are the top patent filers in A61B; while Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Immatics Biotechologies, and Procter & Gamble lead patent filings in A61K.
