The World Health Organization has declared COVID-19 a pandemic on March 11, 2020. COVID-19 currently has 118,326 confirmed cases and has caused 4,292 deaths all over the world. The strain is from the coronavirus family that causes illness as mild as the common cold to more severe cases such as pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure, and to the most extreme case, death. We looked at the patent landscape concerning the Coronavirus over a 20-year period, which covers patents and patent applications from all patent offices around the world. Companies such as Zoetis, Immunomedics, and Kineta rank as top assignees in various categories, while the bulk of patenting activity remains largely in the academe, averaging from 50-60% of the various dataset categories.
