In our 2024 Patent Roundup Report, we explore the patents granted by and applications filed at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) from October 1, 2023, to September 30, 2024 (FY 2024), while comparing year-over-year (YoY) changes with FY 2023.
U.S. Patents issued, FY 2024
In FY 2024, the USPTO issued a total of 326,921 patents across diverse industries, including technology, semiconductors, automotive, finance, healthcare, and multinational conglomerates. Samsung leads with 10,084 granted patents, more than doubling LG‘s 5,039. Both South Korean technology giants, this underscores their continued dominance in innovation globally.
U.S. Patents filed, FY 2024
We also looked at the 2024 USPTO patent filing data. As of October 28, 2024, the USPTO has published at least 147,164 patent filings for FY 2024. The numbers are expected to go up as patent filing data is still incomplete (due to the 18-month delay in publication). As an early look into the key players of 2024, Samsung remains at the forefront with 6,660 filings, while Huawei and Canon follow, showcasing strong portfolios across a variety of technology areas.
