Patentability search for a university research institute

This prestigious university partnered with Parola Analytics for patentability searches as they pursue patent protection

Our client is a research institute within a prestigious university. They were looking for a reliable patent research partner to conduct patentability searches that would help them evaluate the likelihood of obtaining a patent for their inventions.

In a period of six months, we conducted searches on a number of inventions covering different technology domains.

Pursuing patent protection? We can help.

The "state of the art" challenge

The client had highly technical inventions that were state-of-the-art, and therefore proved difficult to find prior art references. They needed a partner who could conduct comprehensive patentability searches that would identify relevant prior art. The client also required that each search be completed within a tight deadline of 10 working days.

With all these requirements in mind, we knew that the first few days of each project required us to quickly optimize and improve our search strategy.

  • Assembled a team of subject matter experts

We engaged the support of our PhD-level consultants who had the expertise to conduct research on highly technical inventions.

  • Focus on NPL and foreign patents

We expanded our patentability search to put particular focus on non patent literature (NPL) and foreign patents to ensure that we have covered a broad base.

  • Worked with patent attorneys and patent agents

We worked closely with our team of U.S. patent attorneys and patent agents who provided a deeper background of the invention’s technology area. This helped us fine-tune the keywords and search strings used for the project.

The results

Our team was able to provide the client with comprehensive patentability searches that identified all relevant prior art references. We were able to deliver the reports within the tight deadline of 10 working days.

The output consisted of detailed technical mapping charts and an additional summary section that described in detail the level of relevance of the references and how each item relates to the important elements of their invention. This particular “summary” is an added feature designed specifically for the client.
