A global consumer electronics company engaged us to conduct a comprehensive prior art search relating to a patent covering digital audio coding and synthesis technologies. The patent formed part of a broader intellectual property dispute involving multimedia processing technologies used in consumer electronics. The client needed to assess the strength and validity of the asserted patent to inform its licensing strategy and evaluate potential litigation options.
The asserted patent involved sophisticated digital signal processing techniques for synthesizing spatial audio, including dividing audio signals into multiple frequency bands and applying auditory scene parameters based on coherence measurements to recreate realistic sound fields.

We performed a comprehensive invalidity search covering U.S. and international patent literature, technical publications, academic conference papers, and audio engineering research. Our team evaluated nearly 150 technical references spanning digital signal processing, binaural audio, spatial sound reproduction, frequency-band processing, and virtual sound synthesis. The research focused on identifying earlier disclosures corresponding to the patent’s most technically significant claim limitations, including coherence-based audio parameter generation and synthesized sound field reconstruction.

Our search identified numerous highly relevant references from leading innovators in digital audio technology, including patents and publications originating from Dolby Laboratories, Philips, Nokia, Creative Technology, QSound, and other pioneers in spatial audio processing. Several references disclosed key aspects of the claimed invention, providing the client with a substantial body of technical evidence to evaluate the patent’s validity and assess available response strategies.
The matter ultimately concluded with a multi-year patent cross-licensing agreement, enabling both parties to continue utilizing their respective patent portfolios and commercialize digital audio technologies under a long-term licensing framework. While that outcome reflected a range of legal and business considerations, our prior art research provided the technical evidence needed to support the client’s evaluation of the asserted patent and inform its strategic decision-making throughout the negotiations.
