Terminology alignment for search precision
Established clear, client-aligned definitions for core technical concepts to ensure consistent and comprehensive patent retrieval.
The Challenge
A global oil and gas leader engaged Parola Analytics to conduct a comprehensive patent landscape in the highly specialized field of computational stratigraphy. The objective was to identify relevant patents and non-patent literature worldwide, while gaining clarity on emerging technologies, research directions, and competitive activity.
The challenge was compounded by inconsistent terminology across patent and scientific literature. Key concepts such as stratigraphy, computational stratigraphy, and physics-based modeling, lacked standardized definitions, creating risks of incomplete or misaligned search results in a technically nuanced domain.
The Solution
From the outset, our team engaged in a consultative process to ensure both technical precision and strategic relevance. By aligning closely with the client on definitions and scope, the team built a robust framework for identifying and classifying relevant prior art across jurisdictions.
This approach enabled the creation of a high-quality, structured dataset that reflects the true state of innovation in computational stratigraphy.
Notably, this project was completed before the widespread adoption of modern AI tools. At the time, we developed our own machine learning models to assist with patent categorization and relevancy assessment, enabling us to efficiently process and validate a large volume of technical documents.
