Our 2025 Patent Roundup Report analyzes patents granted and applications filed at the USPTO, covering October 1, 2024, to September 30, 2025 (FY 2025), with year-over-year comparisons to FY 2024. 

The report offers a detailed view of the companies, technologies, and law firms shaping U.S. innovation.

2025 U.S. Patents Granted 

In FY 2025, the USPTO issued 327,641 patents, a slight increase over the previous year. The top four assignees, Samsung, LG, TSMC, and Qualcomm, maintained their positions from last year, reflecting consistent leadership in innovation.

2025 U.S. Patent Filings 

As of December 5, 2025, the USPTO has published at least 173,428 patent applications. Samsung Group continues to lead in filings, followed by TSMC and Huawei, highlighting strong global activity in U.S. patent protection.

2025 U.S. Patents: Top Technology Areas

Patent filing activity in 2025 highlights key innovation trends: 

  • User interface devices (G06F 3/00) – keyboards, touchscreens, and displays
  • Semiconductor manufacturing (H01L 021/00) – lithography, doping, and etching 
  • Energy storage and conservation (Y02E 60/00) – smart grids and energy-efficient devices 

Patent grant data echoes this focus, with user interface devices and semiconductor manufacturing leading, followed by information retrieval and data structures, reflecting sustained innovation in digital interaction, advanced computing, and chip fabrication.  

2025 Top 100 U.S. Patent Law Firms 

The Top Patent Law Firms continue to play a critical role in helping innovators secure patent protection and translate ideas into enforceable IP assets. 

Leading the list in FY 2025 are Fish & Richardson, Sughrue Mion, and Foley & Lardner. Together with the Top 10 firms, they contributed 11% of all patents issued by the USPTO. Our report includes a deep dive into these firms, exploring their top clients, assignee country distribution, and leading technology areas.
